They don't have to outlaw peanut butter for me. The minute I heard about the rat droppings that was it. I'll never eat peanut butter again. But that's a good thing.

BTW - it's not that I wouldn't have realized that food stored in storage facilities would have, errr, those kinds of problems - but I don't want it in the front of my mind. I haven't eaten at Taco Bell in years and I used to love them...

Let's not forget the Supreme Court's ruling last year that police can stop and demand ID from citizens at random.

Good points, Jeff. And yeh, I've been following Nancy Willard's coverage of the Julie Amero case. Another case where the "justice" system... isn't.

How about the "Dateline: Predator" which has caught a few dozen pervs and in the meantime taken cyberporn to a new level. In all these shows, how much time is spent showing safe practices, or even good sites for kids and parents? Uh... I think 5 minutes during season one.

Chris Hansen is a tool who poses as a white knight for corporate interests. It's all about the ratings baby! Uh oh... I said "baby"... I think Chris is at the door now.

Seriously, no one is going to defend pederasts (or should), but our mass media obsession with it is its own style of pornography for the sake of ratings. It's shows like Dateline which lead to cases like Julie Amero's (a case which I've been following through the wwwedu list and Nancy Willard's scrupulous coverage thereof). It's appalling.

The chilling effects in K-12 schools is even worse. No one seems to care if computers are used in schools, given the 100% negativism that we get in mass media about how the Net is (basically) soley for child predators.
